Day 2 of my birthday month

I love that I was born in the month of January. Years ago, I decided to pause for daily reflection. In a world that keeps us moving, taking time to slow down and notice what’s real, including how we’re treating each other online, is essential.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how fast our environment is shifting with artificial intelligence (AI) and how quickly human elements get dismissed. I have no problem with the modern tools that we have available at our disposal.

We should use them. What concerns me is how easily we use these tools to judge people. I’m not anti-technology. It’s the advancements of technology that have given us the ability do some amazing things. Take writing. Tools have evolved. The fountain pen was once the newest thing just like AI is for us today. What’s not normal is when “AI detector” tools become the judge of someone’s humanity or intelligence. Some of these tools reward simpler phrasing and penalize professional writing styles.

I'm an electrical engineer by discipline and a Project Manager by trade. My natural, logical, analytical mind has the ability to develop thoughts and concepts utilizing professional vocabulary and clear structure. So, if I write the way I naturally think, I am often labeled “AI” even when I didn’t use it. My intellect gets treated like something artificial. If you were to take this post and have it analyzed by one of these tools, I am certain it will receive a high AI score.

I know my post is not the only one.

Use the tools, but apply wisdom. Do not let these tools cause you discount people. If something resonates, keep the meat and toss the bones. If you’re truly unsure about a person’s voice, have a real conversation. Video helps, but in-person connection still matters. We need to be seen, heard, and known. Technology should help us connect, not give us another reason to dismiss each other.

So, Day 2 of my birthday month. Just a thought that hit me today.
